Les Copains d’Abord is situated at the Mahebourg waterfront, facing the blue lagoon where the famous naval battle of “Vieux Grand Port” was fought in the 19th century. It has rapidly asserted itself as the best restaurant in the South of the island where you come to taste what the ocean can offer as its best catch. It has a special warmth with great musical entertainment in the evening and on Friday evenings a karaoke with is very well appreciated.
Alain O’Reilly, owner of Les Copains d’Abord, is a legendary figure in the world of tourism and created the famous Domaine du Chasseur over twenty years ago. Today, he is at the head of a clan, christened “Le Club des Grands Bois”.
The menu of Les Copains d’Abord offers venison and boar meat from the Domaine du Chasseur and the poultry bred at the Domaine’s farm. Palm trees and vegetables are also grown at the Domaine.
Fish and seafood come from the daily catch of a small group of fishermen from Mahebourg. Alain O’Reilly, the owner has provided them with the equipment (pirogue, engine, fishing and security equipment).
On top of these delicacies, the menu at Les Copains d’Abord has some exceptional specialities from the most ancient Mauritian traditions which Alain O’Reilly has recreated. Thus, we can enjoy deer’s tongue or brains, palm heart gratin with crab meat from mangroves or Kono Kono and a very refreshing pineapple mousse. On a more classic note, we can also savour the best curries, served with a lovely variety of chutneys (Mauritian chatinis).
It would be a missed opportunity to pass by the South without stopping by Les Copains d’Abord…
