Rodrigues Island
Indian Ocean

The Rodrigues Island, it is nature in a pure state.
The "Cinderella" of the Mascarene opens her heart to you.

Rodrigues Island is of volcanic origin and is located at about six hundred and fifty kilometres (650Km) on the North-East of Mauritius, at about nearly nine hundred kilometres (900Km) on the east north east of Reunion Island and at one thousand five hundred and forty kilometres (1540Km) on the north east of Madagascar on lattitude19,42 degrees South and longitude 62,25 degrees East.

It is the smallest island of the Mascarenes region and the biggest under the dependency of the Republic of Mauritius. The island has a total surface area 110 km square and it is eighteen 18) times smaller than Mauritius. Rodrigues is surrounded by a coral reef and the lagoon is about 200 km square in surface area.About twenty islets surrounds the island on the north ,south and mostly on the west.

The landscape is very mountainous and gives beautiful scenery. Mont Limon the highest peak is about 393 meters above sea level. Valleys and hills give the impression that the island is bigger than it seems to be. In the north, the south and the east the mountains slope dangerously towards the sea separated by deep and narrow valleys while in the west the slopes are smoother.

The longest distance from Pointe Coton in the East and Pointe Mapou in the west is only 18 Km and the widest distance from Pointe Jantac in the north and Pointe Poursuite in the south is a little above 8km.The area, not including that of the many islets which surround the island, is about 68 square km; however, owing to the broken, hilly nature of the landscape, distances on the ground and actual surface area are considerably greater.

An island of savage beauty where time has stood still. Its remote location ensures calmness "out of the world". She imposes her own rhythm, defeating restlessness. She derives her charm from the timidity of her inhabitants, their simple approach to life.

Dream and Reality merges into each other in Rodrigues. When the plane start its landing approach to Plaine Corail Airport, the island appears to be a big deep blue rock amidst a very beautiful lagoon where different colours of blue are mixed. The natural beauty of the island will instantly impress you.

When the plane has landed and that its engines has stopped there is a deep silence and from the plane steps one is marvelled by this beautiful scenery that one sees.

The calmness that prevails will give you the impression that you have stepped years back in time. The past, the present and the future are blended together. No need of anti-pollution mask, no industrial noise in Rodrigues. When you take a deep breath, the lungs are filled up with pure fresh and tonic air, especially early in the morning.

Rodrigues was discovered by Diego Rodriguez between the 4th and the 9th February 1528.In these days Portuguez and English navigators were using the island of Rodrigues as a reference when sailing to India. Years later after a very long journey in May 1691, Francois Leguat and seven men landed in Rodrigues.

Two years later seing that the island was too mountainous and that flatter land were limited. They therefore built a boat and left the island. Lots of palms trees were available on the island. Turtles, fishes and birds especially the Solitaire were in great abundance. Soon after that the authorities that were living on Reunion Island decided to come to Rodrigues.
