The château de Labourdonnais was built in 1858 by Christian Wiehe, an insightful man, whose numerous descendants still mostly live in Mauritius today. Soon afterwards, a tropical orchard was planted on the lands of the Domaine, which still holds a few centenary mango trees. A sugar factory was also built in Labourdonnais and the estate’s main economic activity remained sugar production. When the factory was demolished in 1960, major agricultural diversification took place with the creation of a 50-hectare modern orchard, planted with a wide variety of tasty tropical fruits such as mangoes, litchis, pineapples, guavas, bananas, passion fruit, kumquat, grapefruit and other citrus. The annual fruit production lies around 1000 tons and enables the manufacture of various naturally flavoured fruit by-products like fruit bars, jams, marmalades and fresh fruit juice.

The “fruit stroll” at the Domaine de Labourdonnais, situated just a few kilometres away from the Northern coast, is the perfect opportunity for inland hiking and cycling. That unusual track is easy to follow (from Monday to Saturday) due to its very flat topography. It includes a guided tour of the old 40-hectare orchard among a wide range of tropical fruit trees, colourful and perfumed exotic flowers. The tour also includes a visit of the anthurium flower greenhouses, the nursery La Pépinière and La Corbeille craft shop for a free tasting of our fruit pastes and fresh fruit juices.
"La Pépinière" is the estate’s greenhouse selling a variety of local and tropical green plants and very decorative and colourful flowers for your garden.
- Green plants
- Colourful Hibiscus flowers
- Palm trees
- Decorative ceramic pots
"La Corbeille" is a lovely little shop situated on the side of the road leading to the château and selling all the natural products of Les Vergers de Labourdonnais, as well as other sweet and salty homemade cakes and South African estate wine.
