Cap Malheureux offers magnificent views of some small islands off the
coast, such as Ile Plate (Flat Island), famous for its lighthouse, and opposite lies Gabriel Island, Ile Ronde
(Round Island), a wildlife bird sanctuary, and Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin), an enormous rock
of historical importance rising from the ocean. Since, it was from there that the English secretly
embarked on the 2nd September 1810 to win over the island from the
French.
Cap Malheureux has a small cemetery lying right on the beach and facing the Coin de Mire, also called Gunner's Quoin, measures just 65 hectares and lies 8km north of Mauritius.
There are remnants of a sugar plantation set up by Dutch settlers.
