La Vieille Cheminée is a place unique unto its own. Exuding authenticity, it allows one to discover a way of typical Mauritian living, where one stumbles upon local colours and a gentleness of living inspired by its fauna and flora. During your stay in our rustic but stylish and comfortable lodges you may discover Mauritius’ natural splendour on horseback, mountain bike or by foot.
La Vieille Cheminée is a small agricultural farm at Chamarel, which is a
picturesque village with its delicious restaurants, offering a pleasant stop at
lunch time. It is a beautiful region of the island; near the Black River
nature reserve and several mountain peaks, which are relatively easy to climb.
Other added attractions are the Chamarel waterfalls, seven couloured earths and
the adventure park.
ACCOMMODATION
Overnight stays are offered in 3 typical
‘creole' style homes - meticulously decorated with rural charm. All homes
possess their own unique personality and characteristics by their manner of
décor. No matter what choice one makes, the charm and magic are there and one
is transported to a Mauritius of long ago - where life under the shadow of the
old stone chimney was gentle, cradled by the sounds of the old tractor, the
song of the singing roosters, by the cutting of the sugar cane, and by the
reaping of fruits. All of this within 10 minutes drive of the west coast beaches.
Meals
We do not have a
restaurant on the farm but all the houses have a fully equipped kitchen. A
catering service is optional: meals cooked on the farm must be ordered, with a
minimum 24 hours notice. Dishes are served in the cottages and the service is
done at the discretion of the client.
In each house
-The kitchens are equipped with oven, fridge, kettle, microwave,
toaster, cutlery, crockery, iron and ironing table. Electrical adapter and fan
in each room.
- Bed linen and towels,
household products (matches, soaps, toilet paper, cleaning products and insect
repellents).
- Air-conditioner in the
Perchoir and the Remise and a chimney in the Campement and Remise.
- A BBQ with a bag of coal on arrival and wood for fires in the
chimney.
- A maid service from 08h00 to 12h00
and guard service on the farm 24hr.
- Residents have free access to the
numerous paths of the domain (plan provided).
On the Farm
La Cabane: next to the
stables is also the farm office. Tea and coffee is at your disposal, which you
may drink while watching the horses come back from their pastures or in a cosy chair
next to the fireplace in the winter time.
Chickens: Further down
in a little valley, we have a chicken run, with different variety of chickens
which will be fun for the small ones.
Horses: They originate from
South Africa
and are ideal for riding on the farm. They are ideally suited to beginners and
advanced riders.
Swimming pool: Situated
on top of a hill in the middle of the property, offering a superb view on the
countryside as well as an ideal spot for spending a relaxing day. We can
organize some sandwiches and a cool bag on request.
EXCURSIONS
We offer guided excursions through
the farm, on foot and on horseback. Tours
must be booked with in 24 hours notice.
Walking through sugar-cane, banana and pineapple fields,
trailing the banks of the river, entering the cool shelter of the travelers'
palm and indigenous forests, where the horses can momentarily unwind and our
guests relax...so many places to discover. Our guide will be pleased to accompany
you on foot or horseback, to discover the flora and fauna of our island and
explain the history of the property and the region.
