Mauritius is a volcanic island of 10 million years old; only 1865SqM in area. The central plateau reaches 600M in altitude with the highest peak, le Piton de la Rivière Noire, and hitting 827M.
The island has an important economic role in the Indian Ocean. It is situated at 855 Kms on the east of Madagascar and at 160 Kms in the North-East of Reunion Island, Mauritius extends on 2040 Km2.
The coastline of 1600 Kms is almost entirely surrounded by one of the largest unbroken coral reefs in the world. In summer, from November to April, the temperature varies from 25 to 35ºC. The hours of daylight are approximately from 05.30 to 19.00 in summer and 06.00 to 18.00 in winter.
The cyclonic season is between November and March. Port Louis is the economic and administrative capital city. It is also a modern, well-equipped and efficiently operated port.
Rodrigues Island, 560 Kms in the North-East, also forms part of the Republic of Mauritius.
Mauritius officially includes also the islands Agalega and Saint Brandon.

There is no active volcano in Mauritius, but dormant as per Haroun Tazieff since his last trip to Mauritius and one can see some extinct craters namely the famous "Trou aux Cerfs" in Curepipe.
